Shake Up To Wake Up

Ever since I was a young girl, September was never a month I was fond of. It always meant my easy breezy days of summer are gone and the fast paced, rigorous schedules were about to begin. Vacations are done and obligations arise. The sight of newspaper circulars with all of the back-to-school supplies still gives me a pang in my stomach - and feeling the cool breeze in the air reminds me that I must pull out those sweaters, coats and boots and buckle up for a long winter's nap. Now that I'm an adult and I spend winters in Florida and school days are long gone, September still holds an energy of needing to be on high alert.

Although we celebrate several birthdays in my family, we have also suffered great losses; one most recently of my dear aunt Patty whom I write about in my book "The Happy Medium": Life Lessons From The Other Side. September starts new beginnings, probably more so than January 1st and like any transition, the shakeup begins. I have done Facebook Live videos in the past explaining that there is a "Shake Up" reality happening for us to "Wake Up". Along with it being Suicide Awareness Month, lets not forget that September is National Preparedness month which is sponsored by FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency). This means the Department of Homeland Security encourages Americans to take steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses, schools and communities. I never made this connection until now when I put it all together. I'm sure many tragic events have taken place in the month of September when one looks back through history, but one that is still very current and alive in our hearts and minds is that dreadful event that occurred in NYC in 2001 when everything was supposed to be business as usual. Together with this continuous huge hole in our hearts for every victim involved in the 9/11 catastrophes, we simultaneously are consumed with the wraths of hurricanes known as Harvey, Irma, Jose, & Maria - such basic names for NOT such basic devastation.

To add to the list of tragedies, we cannot dismiss the horrific deadly earthquake in Mexico City, along with the roaring fires burning in Montana, Oregon and California, just to name a few. Now do you see why I don't like the month of September ? Our reality may be changing as we once knew it, but in these times it is important for us to stay focused and grounded in our faith. Whether it be September, or any other month, with every painful incident, we breathe a collective sigh and begin the mourning process all over again. It does not help matters that many young Millennials are obsessed with violence through the never ending production of popular killing video games and watching violence filled action movies and television shows. The older generation is no different in their quest for watching violence starting as early as with John Wayne movies; cowboys and Indian films and never ending war movies. Our love for violence ends when it hits home and when fiction becomes our reality. Unfortunately this fiction is NOW our reality. Mass shootings and bombing are developing trends and these events are no longer mind-blowing pieces of information. We can't stay numb or desensitized to tragedy. We need to wake up from our spiritual slumber and remain with our hearts open. We cannot dismiss these horrific acts and accept them as our new reality. Having compassion for others in their time of need is a trend that will never go out of style. As proven many times in the past, our nation stands strong in crisis and even though we may feel a whole range of emotions from anger to fear, we must stay strong in mind and in body. It is during these hard times that we discover how strong we truly are. Many people don't think they are equipped to help others but sometimes all we need to do is to lend an ear to listen or a shoulder to cry on. Offering our thoughts and prayers are great too, but I feel we can do more. We need to peel back our egos and forgive those who may have hurt us. We need to stop judging and stick together. United we Stand, Divided we Fall. My favorite quote is "This too shall pass". In the wake of all tragedy, there is always goodness and God's grace is forever present. The light never stops shining as the sun has never failed to rise. Life is a series of cycles. Once the bad cycles pass, it is always followed by renewed energy and the rainbows always appear after the storms. I have faith in a higher power, I have faith that the sun will rise tomorrow, I have faith in mankind and I have faith in you...... 🌞
